How to Run a Hackathon for Digital Nomads: Client Case

About SDV Digital Nomad Hiring Weekend

The SDV Digital Nomad Hiring Weekend is a two-day online hackathon run on the tulula platform by SDVentures – one of the world's largest groups of social discovery companies. Their products are used by more than 140 million users in 100 countries around the world. The event participants had two challenges to solve: develop an application for P2P calling or develop software that allows users to add filters and masks to their video calls.

Main objectives

The company was looking for innovative ways to reach out to the tech community, increase brand awareness, and expand its recruitment funnel. They liked the idea of organizing a hackathon and wanted to run a hackathon on a single platform that combined all the necessary features: easy registration process, team formation, chat system, and integrated video conferencing. They didn’t want to use multiple services and risk losing their participants to any hassles. In addition, they wanted full customization – something that would make them stand out.

How did tulula help?

We developed a hackathon project plan and designed a customized competition page, as well as fully prepared the platform for participants to easily register, network, and communicate with experts. In total, 251 tech professionals registered on the platform for the SDV Digital Nomad Hiring Weekend hackathon. After careful selection, 123 participants took part in the event. Tulula made it easy for SDV to host over 100 attendees and successfully organized the entire event. Through the platform, SDV also had access to all the necessary analytics on the participants: from the source of registration to engagement analytics.

SDV took advantage of additional tulula features that included automated leaderboard formation and a simplified judging process. This made it easy for the judges to evaluate the results and vote for the best solutions. Another exciting tulula feature was the ability to have all communication between the participants and experts in one place - on the platform.
